Client Spotlight: Sunni Spencer

by Frame of Mind January 31, 2014

Name: Sunni Spencer

Career: Vice President of ENK Vegas

Coaching: 10 weeks of 1-1 coaching plus maintenance with coach Dave Gorham

Why did you seek out coaching with Frame of Mind Coaching?
I heard about FOM from my boss who coached with Kim for 5 years. He had great things to say about their coaching, so I thought I’d give it a try.

What did you learn from coaching?
— My overall experience was invaluable. It helped me see how my thinking was affecting my outcome. I realized that I was causing friction in my relationships, and inadvertently creating negative experiences in my life. Now, my relationships with my staff and upper management are different. But they haven’t changed at all. The only thing that is different…is me. I have changed the way that I think and it’s had a huge impact on my life. It has increased my level of happiness.

— I went into coaching thinking I had to fix a lot of things about myself. What I learned was that the characteristics I thought were weaknesses are actually strengths. I was under the impression that I needed to get rid of my sensitive side if I wanted to get where I wanted in my career. My coach helped me realize that my sensitivity allows me to relate with people and communicate with them effectively.

— I am able to trade up my thoughts more and look at all experiences in a positive light. I learned to focus on people’s strengths and less on their weaknesses, and I apply this in my daily life.

— In the past, I would allow other people’s behaviour to affect me personally. Now, I see that people’s behaviour is about them and not about me. It’s like I have an inside secret. This mentality really changes everything for me.

How did journaling affect your coaching experience?
At first, I was really opposed to journaling, and it felt like a chore. Soon I realized the benefits: Journaling is a way to deal with your emotions and really increase your self-awareness. It’s something nice to be able to refer back to. Journaling creates a 24-7 coaching experience. Some of the feedback I’ve gotten in the journaling responses has been just as valuable as the verbal coaching.

What made you decide to pursue Frame of Mind Coaching Certification?
I’ve been in a leadership role in the fashion industry for 16 years. I’ve always wanted to be able to help the people that I manage. The Frame of Mind Coaching Certification program allows me to continue developing as a leader and it gives me the skills to help other people grow and reach their full potential.

What would you tell others about coaching?
I always say that even healthy people should have a therapist. Coaching kicks that up a notch. It’s like 21st century therapy. You’re focussed on the future versus the past. I highly recommend it for anyone who can’t say their life is perfect.
