Are You Reading The Signs?

by Kim Ades December 23, 2016

stop sign
The signs started to appear.

First, the battery on my watch died.

Second, my phone ran out of space and stopped receiving emails.

Third, we got snowed in and couldn’t access the street.

Things were shutting down around me, but I resisted the prospect of succumbing to the signs. I tried to address each problem quickly so that I could get back on track as soon as possible. Interestingly though – the harder I tried, the stronger the signs became.

I shoveled the driveway so that I could get my car out of the garage. About an hour after I was done, I found myself in agony with severe back pain. I could hardly move.

I asked Allan, my husband, to take my watch to a store to get it fixed. He came back with my watch in hand and told me that they didn’t have the right battery and it had to be specially ordered.

I tried cleaning out my phone to create more space by deleting old emails and unnecessary apps. Unfortunately, I ended up over-deleting and lost some valuable videos of my parents.

What the heck was going on?!

I felt like nothing was going my way. It seemed as though I was being stopped at every turn.

The truth is, I wasn’t paying attention to the signs. These signs were telling me that I needed to shut down for a bit and just take some time to refuel. I was pushing too hard, trying to FORCE things to work out.

We do that often. We want things to be different so we decide to muscle up and take massive action in order to MAKE things happen for us. We have heard many sayings encouraging us to get off our butts and move into action. Here are a few that have shown up in my inbox just recently…

The path to success is to take massive, determined action. -Tony Robbins

Action is the foundational key to all success. -Pablo Picasso

Thinking will not overcome fear but action will. -William Clement Stone

Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit. -Conrad Hilton

While action will certainly lead to results, not all action will lead to the results we desire. If we are tired, grumpy, exhausted, or just plain old “not into it,” forcing ourselves to take action will typically lead to unwanted results.

Here’s how it works…

Thoughts precede action – ALWAYS. First we think, then we act.

If we try to take action when our thoughts are not aligned with our goals, we will get unwanted results. It’s really that simple. Before deciding to take massive action, it’s important to take a moment to check in with your thoughts to determine if they are going to allow you to reach your goal with ease or if they are going to stand in your way.

Imagine trying to make a sale while thinking “This is never going to work.” This is a perfect example of how your thoughts will trump any action you ever try to take.

In my case, there was one more sign that I was choosing to ignore… I was having trouble getting up in the morning. I am usually a JUMP OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING type of person, but for whatever reason, instead of just getting up, I felt like I needed a few more minutes.

And really, that was the most important sign. The sign was telling me that I needed to slow down and take a break. After a hectic quarter of travel, speaking engagements, training and a full schedule of coaching, the signs were letting me know that it was okay for me to take care of myself by sleeping in a little, resting and replenishing my energy.

As we enter the holiday season, I encourage you to pay attention to the signs. What are they telling you? Is it time for massive action or is it time to slow down and take a moment to reflect on what you’ve experienced in 2016 and align your thinking so that reaching your goals in 2017 is a breeze?
