Who Is The Real You?
I just got off the phone with a new client from Milwaukee. Right before I hung up, she said, “By the way, I love your accent, it’s so cute!”
What??? I have an accent? Since when?
“I don’t have an accent, YOU have an accent!” I said. After all, she was from Milwaukee!
She insisted that I was the one with the accent.
“I can hear it in the words you use,” she said. “Like the way you say ‘aboot’”
For the record, I actually NEVER say “aboot.”
We laughed it off and hung up, looking forward to our next call.
But the conversation got me thinking. Her perception of me was diametrically different from my own perception of me. And that’s not uncommon. We often see ourselves very differently from how others see us, and vice versa. The question is, which version is real?
The version of us that is real is the one that is shinier, brighter, smarter, more capable, and far more attractive!
Why? Because the best version of ourselves is the one that is reflective of who we are when we are in a state of great personal alignment. It’s the one we are when we have less resistance, when we are happier, when we are feeling good, and when we are making a greater contribution to the world.
I have this conversation with my clients all the time. Who is the real you? And I tell them that the real you is the one that isn’t burdened by a set of beliefs that cause fear, frustration, disappointment, resentment and unhappiness. The real you is the one that is free of limiting beliefs. The real you is the one that feels comfortable in your own skin, the one that smiles and laughs and feels at ease with the world around you. The real you is the one that appears when you are “in the zone.” THAT is the real you.
Take note of the moments when you show up as the real you. Who are you with? What are you doing? What skill sets are at play? And most importantly, what do you need to shift in your life in order for you to live THIS way far more often?
