Breaking through the glass ceiling Willy Wonka style!
As a semi-retired professional singer, I still make it a priority to find time to keep my chops in shape by singing at home. This afternoon I came across a folder of music I had put together a couple of years ago for a charity concert and began singing through the repertoire. At one point as I moved from one tune to the next, I came across one of my all time favorites, “Pure Imagination,” made famous by Gene Wilder as he introduced the world to Willy Wonka in the classic 1971 movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. As I sang through it today, I found myself moved by the tune as always, but the words took on an entirely new meaning.
See, I’m a big believer in journaling. It can make such an incredible difference in our lives, especially when we take time to write out a clear vision of what we want our life to look like. Well guess what? Creating a clear vision of the future takes imagination! Pure imagination!
Start by allowing your imagination some more time to think and breathe and live. Schedule some quality time with it so that together you can begin to form a clear image of what you want your future to look like.
After that, it’s important to remind yourself of that vision daily. As you do that you will begin to move toward it.
OK, so you may be sitting there thinking “oh, sure, it’s just that easy! Imagine it, remind yourself daily and you move toward it.” Yes! It is that easy!
You see, it really comes down to this. What you focus on grows! It goes without saying that focusing on what we want our life to look like is far more productive than focusing on everything that we perceive to be standing in our way, and yet that’s what we do all too often.
So, how did Willy Wonka spark all of this today? Well, take a minute and read the lyrics from “Pure Imagination,” or sing it out loud for more fun and impact if you’d like.
[one_half]Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination! Take a look and you’ll see into your imagination. We’ll begin with a spin traveling in a world of my creation! What we’ll see will defy explanation!
If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it! Anything you want to, do it! Want to change the world? There’s nothing to it! There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination! Living there, you’ll be free if you truly wish to be![/one_half] [one_half_last]

Pretty powerful right? The focus is on the positive and the possible. If you want to view paradise? Just view it! Want to change the world? Do it! Don’t just sit there thinking up all the excuses of why something can’t be done or all the reasons why you can’t have the life you want! Get up! Get out there! “Put me in coach! I’m ready to play, TODAY!” Go do it!
Creating a vision for yourself and for your life really does take imagination, and it also takes focusing your imagination on the positive and on all the incredible possibilities. Focus on what you want in life rather than on what you don’t have now. That’s what journaling is all about. Imagine the life you want, write it down, focus on it every day and hold on tight as you’re propelled through that Chocolate Factory glass ceiling and afforded a spectacular view of the life you’ve created.
